Sprouse to Succeed Blume as American Physical Society Editor-In-Chief (January 12, 2006)

Ridge, NY, September 12, 2006 -- The American Physical Society announces the appointment of Gene D. Sprouse, a professor of physics at Stony Brook University, as its new Editor-in-Chief. Sprouse will succeed Martin Blume, who has served in the position for ten years.

Sprouse received his PhD from Stanford University in 1968. He joined the faculty at Stony Brook University in 1970, was promoted to full professor in 1979, and chaired the department from 1990-96. He was one of the builders of the Stony Brook Superconducting LINAC and has been Director of the Nuclear Structure Laboratory since 1996. He has been awarded international fellowships in Japan, Canada and Germany, and visiting appointments at Caltech and Argonne National Laboratory. Sprouse has also served on a number of review panels and advisory committees for DOE and NSF. His research interests have centered on nuclear moments and their use as probes of atoms and solids. Most recently, he and Luis Orozco, now at the University of Maryland, have led a team that made precision measurements of the atomic properties of the radioactive element Francium. Stony Brook University has recognized Sprouse for his excellence in teaching with the Chancellor's and President's teaching awards.

The position of Editor-in-Chief is one of three co-equal operating officers of the APS, and includes primary responsibility for the Physical Review series of physics journals. Sprouse will head the APS Editorial Office located in eastern Long Island, near Brookhaven National Laboratory. With a staff of 150, the office receives and processes peer review for nearly 30,000 physics manuscripts annually, two thirds of which originate outside the US. The office also manages an electronic archive of the 400,000 Physical Review articles published since 1893.

"I've known Gene for years," says outgoing Editor in Chief Blume. "I can see why the search committee, members of our Presidential line and the APS Council is entrusting him with the continued development of the journals, handling of the publishing operations and management of the editorial office and its staff." Sprouse is expected to take over the position as of March 1 2007 but will become increasingly involved as the date approaches. "Marty has set a high standard for this job, and I am honored and excited to take over this responsibility from him. I look forward to working with the other officers and with the outstanding staff at Ridge to maintain and improve the excellence of the APS Journals." Sprouse commented.
